One day, a woman suddenly collapsed on a busy street. People around her stopped and looked worried, but they did not know what to do. Then a man who happened to be nearby ran over quickly. He knelt down beside her and stayed calm. A few minutes later, he carefully checked her breathing and put her in the recovery position. He also asked someone nearby to call for an ambulance. Soon, the ambulance arrived and the woman was taken to hospital. She was not seriously hurt, but she felt very shaken by what had happened. She was also very grateful to the man who had helped her. A few weeks later, the woman went to a community centre and signed up for a first aid course. She wanted to learn how to help others in the same way that the man had helped her. She studied hard and practiced the skills many times. Several months later, she had become a qualified first aid instructor and was teaching classes at a local community centre. People of all ages came to learn, and they listened carefully and practiced the techniques together. The woman felt proud and happy that she was now able to help others in the same way that she had been helped.
質問と模範解答 | Questions & Model Answers
No. 1
Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the woman, what would you be thinking?
Model Answer
I'd be thinking, "A few months ago I was the one lying on the ground and I had no idea what to do. Now I am the teacher. If even one person in this class remembers what to do when someone collapses, it could save a life. I want to keep teaching and help as many people as possible."
Now, Mr./Ms. ——, please turn over the card and put it down.
No. 2
Do you think first aid should be taught as a required subject in schools?
Model Answer
Yes, I think it should. Emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time, and the faster someone helps, the better the outcome can be. If young people learn first aid at school, they will carry those skills into their adult lives. Some countries already make this a required subject, and I think Japan should do the same.
No. 3
Some people say they are afraid to help in an emergency because they might make things worse. What do you think about this?
Model Answer
I understand why people feel that way, but I think doing nothing is often more dangerous than trying to help. Basic actions like calling an ambulance, keeping the person calm, or putting them in the recovery position can make a big difference. I think the best way to overcome this fear is to take a first aid course, so that people feel more confident when an emergency happens.
No. 4
Do you think companies should do more to prepare their employees for emergencies?
Model Answer
Yes, I think they should. People spend a large part of their lives at work, so having trained staff in the office could save lives. Some companies already offer first aid training or keep equipment like defibrillators nearby. However, I think more companies need to make this a priority, not just something that a few people do voluntarily.
