One day, a group of children were playing happily in the park. One boy climbed up the slide and started to go down it. Suddenly, the slide broke under him. A piece of it cracked and came off. The boy looked very shocked, and the other children stopped playing and stared at the broken slide. That evening, a father who had seen what happened sat at his desk at home. He took some photos of the broken slide and wrote a letter to the city council. He explained what had happened and asked them to fix the equipment. Three months later, workers came to the park to install new playground equipment. They put in a bright new slide and a new swing set. The father stood with his children and watched the work, and his children pointed at the new slide with excitement. That afternoon, the children were playing happily on the new equipment. One child slid down the new slide with a big smile, and another child swung high on the new swing. The father sat on a bench nearby, smiling as he watched them enjoy the park.
質問と模範解答 | Questions & Model Answers
No. 1
Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the father, what would you be thinking?
Model Answer
I'd be thinking, "I'm so glad I sent that letter. The new equipment is safe, and my children are having so much fun. It feels good to know that writing to the council made a real difference. I should remember that if I see another problem in the future, I can take action again."
Now, Mr./Ms. ——, please turn over the card and put it down.
No. 2
Do you think local governments do enough to keep public parks safe?
Model Answer
I think it depends on the area. Some parks are checked often and kept in good condition. However, other parks may not be checked very much, so problems can go unnoticed for a long time. I think governments should check playground equipment regularly so that children can play safely.
No. 3
Some people say that citizens should not need to report problems like this — the government should find them first. Do you agree?
Model Answer
I understand this idea, but I don't completely agree. It is true that the government should check public spaces regularly. However, there are many parks and streets, so the government cannot see every problem right away. I think it is helpful when citizens report problems too, because this can make things get fixed faster.
No. 4
Why do you think it is important for children to have access to safe places to play?
Model Answer
I think it is very important. When children play outside, they get exercise and learn how to interact with other children. If playgrounds are not safe, parents may worry and stop their children from playing there. This means children might spend more time inside instead. Safe play areas help children stay healthy and active.
