One day, a woman was volunteering at a local community center for senior citizens. While she was there, she noticed that many of the elderly visitors could not use their smartphones very well. An older man with a cane kept staring at his phone with a confused look on his face. He did not know how to use even the basic functions. The woman felt worried and decided to do something to help. Two weeks later, she started a free smartphone class at the center. She used a whiteboard to show the seniors how to make video calls, send messages, and save emergency contacts. The seniors listened carefully and tried the steps on their own phones. One month later, the results were wonderful. The elderly man who had struggled before was now sitting in his armchair at home, happily video calling his grandchildren. He smiled with great joy when he saw their faces on the screen. A few months later, however, the woman opened her laptop and found that forty-eight seniors were on the waiting list for her class. She stared at the screen with a surprised expression, realising that she needed to find a way to help more people.
質問と模範解答 | Questions & Model Answers
No. 1
Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the woman, what would you be thinking?
Model Answer
I'd be thinking, "There are so many people who want to join my class, but I cannot help all of them by myself. I should look for volunteers to help me teach, and I could also ask the local government or other organisations for support. If more people helped, we could run more classes and help more seniors."
Now, Mr./Ms. ——, please turn over the card and put it down.
No. 2
Should local governments invest more resources in helping elderly people use digital technology?
Model Answer
Yes, I think they should. Many public services are now moving online, such as booking doctor's appointments or managing pensions. If elderly people do not know how to use a smartphone or computer, they may have trouble doing these things on their own. Governments can help by paying for free classes and providing devices to seniors who do not have them.
No. 3
Do you think that technology will improve the quality of life for elderly people in the future?
Model Answer
Yes, I think technology will help elderly people a lot in the future. For example, video call apps let them talk to family members who live far away, and some devices can check their health automatically. As technology becomes easier to use and less expensive, more elderly people will be able to enjoy these benefits and live more comfortable lives.
No. 4
Some people argue that relying on technology to care for the elderly is impersonal and inadequate. Do you agree?
Model Answer
I understand why some people feel that way, but I don't completely agree. I think technology should be used together with human care, not instead of it. For example, a video call cannot replace a visit from a family member, but it can help people stay connected between visits. If we use technology in the right way, it can actually help elderly people feel less lonely and more supported.
